What a rogue !! His story would make a great movie.Īnyway, This is the book that I just referred to. He also describes the many, many duels he fought on matters of honor as well as to protect his side-line businesses in prostitution, gambling and his sword instruction schools. It was really an eye-opener to me of the conditions in which a soldier of that period served. ![]() My main interest in this book is McBane´s telling of his adventures as a soldier in Scotland, Ireland, France, Holland and Germany during the late 1600´s and early 1700´s. McBane´s book covers the smallsword, spadroon, backsword, but is not as detailed as to techniques as is Hope´s. Hope´s book covers with his use of the smallsword using the hanging guard in 2nd, not ¨typical¨ smallsword fencing technique instruction. as well as Donald McBane´s The Expert Sword-Man´s Companion. It contains a copy of Sir William Hope´s New Method of Fencing, ect. I am forturnate to have a copy of Highland Swordsmanship - Techniques of the Scottish Swordmasters. I hope that other Members will post other sources as surely they are there. A few years ago I was able to find a multitude of online sources by Masters other than Hope. My google-fo is apparently not very strong now. The Linacre School of Defence site that Jonathan referred is the only online location that I have been able to find for smallsword manuals. ![]()
